My students have been ALL IN when it comes to rhetoric and rhetorical appeals! They want to be able to have a conversations with someone and articulate their perspectives in a professional way. With Spring Break quickly approaching, here is an interactive lesson to keep students engaged while engaging with rhetoric, craft, and audience ELA curriculum standards.

First, introduce (or review) each rhetorical appeal (Ethos, Pathos, and Logos) and have students practice dragging and dropping to identify examples of each. Next, model for the class an example of a hot take (I used types of testing, but you can edit the slide to add your own). Walk through with students the expectation for the assignment, and then release them to explore hot takes (spring break themed) on their own and craft an argument for their perspective.

Topics include:
Best Seat on an Airplane

Best Road Trip Snack

Theme Parks or Water Parks

Staying Home or Traveling for Break

Best Spring Break Activity

+MORE!

Students will reflect and share their answers with their peers. Anytime I have done this assignment with students, they get so excited that they don't realize they are practicing ELA things, they just love the time to engage their perspective with others. There are 17 Hot Take Slides to choose from (33 slides total) so you can make this assignment as short or as long as you would like:)
